Pushing Precision: Machining 316 Stainless and 6061 Aluminium on the SYIL X9

When it comes to machining stainless steel, not every machine can handle the challenge — but the SYIL X9 certainly can.

In the TITANS of CNC video, the team put the X9 through its paces on 316 stainless steel and 6061 aluminium, testing both power and precision across a range of conditions. The results? Smooth finishes, stable loads, and confident performance from start to finish.

Cutting 316 Stainless: Smooth Power, Solid Control

The test began with a block of 316 stainless steel held securely in the vise. Using a Core 6 six-flute endmill, the machine ran at 3,800 RPM and 100 inches per minute, translating to roughly 500 surface feet per minute with a 0.004” feed per tooth.

The setup included:
    •    1.1xD axial depth of cut
    •    0.050” radial step over
    •    Air blast cooling (no liquid coolant)

Even under these demanding conditions, the SYIL X9 maintained a stable 50% spindle load, throwing consistent, well-formed chips — and delivering a surprisingly clean surface finish even on the roughing pass.

The team then performed finishing passes, fine-tuning offsets and compensations in the Siemens SINUMERIK 828D control to measure tool wear and repeatability. The result: accuracy to within thousandths of an inch — and a mirror-like finish that speaks volumes about the X9’s rigidity.

Built to Perform: Inside the SYIL X9

After the stainless test, TITANS of CNC introduced the X9 in full detail — and it’s easy to see why this machine stands out in its class.
    •    Rotary table for full 4th-axis capability
    •    12,000 RPM CAT40 spindle delivering 22 horsepower
    •    24-position side-mounted tool changer
    •    Granite epoxy composite casting for vibration damping
    •    13,500 lbs total weight — compared to under 10,000 lbs for most machines in its class

Every part of the SYIL X9 reflects thoughtful engineering and attention to detail — from stainless steel way covers to a refined fit and finish that ensures long-term reliability.

And with its Siemens SINUMERIK 828D control, operators get an industry-standard platform with no hidden costs — powerful functionality, intuitive programming, and advanced features included as standard.

6061 Aluminium: Speed Meets Stability

Next, the X9 moved on to 6061 aluminium, pushing through at 300 inches per minute — a clear demonstration of its versatility.

The team highlighted a key insight: understanding your machine’s torque and horsepower curve is essential. For the X9, maximum power comes at lower RPM ranges (under ~6,000 RPM) — ideal for tougher materials like stainless or steel.

By matching tool selection and feed rates to the machine’s torque curve, machinists can optimise material removal rates (MRR) without overloading the spindle or risking premature wear.

“It’s not just about what the cut sounds like — it’s about knowing what your spindle is doing,” the TITANS of CNC team explained.
“Read your torque and horsepower charts, and you’ll get the most out of your machine without damaging it.”

Smart Machining, Real Results

The SYIL X9 isn’t just a powerful machine — it’s a learning platform for smart machining. The TITANS of CNC team used this session to reinforce an important principle:

Precision machining isn’t guesswork — it’s data, understanding, and control.

By combining the X9’s rigidity, Siemens intelligence, and careful process monitoring, they demonstrated how a compact vertical machining centre can perform at the level of much larger industrial systems.

The Verdict

The SYIL X9 impressed with every cut — handling stainless and aluminium with ease, delivering excellent finishes, and maintaining consistent accuracy throughout.

“The fit and finish of this machine are wonderful,” the team concluded.
“It’s solid, powerful, and fully equipped — no nickel-and-dime options, just performance right out of the crate.”

With its heavy-duty frame, 22 HP CAT40 spindle, and full 4th-axis capability, the SYIL X9 is redefining what small and medium-sized workshops can achieve — offering power, flexibility, and reliability at a size and price that makes sense.
